In fact, using this called “bookmarklet” you can view a list of friends, who according to Facebook, you care about most.

Note that even non-friends appear in this list, to make them more visible I have colored their background blue.

How to use it? It ‘s simple, just drag the link below into your favorites, go to any FB page and click on it: instead of changing page after a few seconds you will see the window!

What is this EdgeRank and how determines our experience on Facebook?

This algorithm, not too sophisticated at the time, is based on 3 key factors: affinity, weight for a particular type of post and time.

The affinity is the interaction that you have with a particular person and is based, as far as I could tell, on the overall interactions that you have with it. I’m talking about likes, comments, shares but also visits to the profile, photos, or other information. I am not yet clear whether it contains only the interactions between one person to the other, or if it is a sum of both. I think the second and I’ll explain it further, but I have to do a few more tests.

The edge’s  weight is nothing more than a preference for a certain type of post (text, photos, videos, events, etc..) that will have priority over others. Simply put: If you like photos, then you will get more photos.

Time is also a key factor clear to all the Facebook users: the new posts have more visibility than the old ones, which disappear from the updates after 1-2 days, if all goes well.

But now back to us, why we are interested in this EdgeRank?

Well, if you’re the manager of a page, or you just want to see what level of “edge” you have with one person, this indicator is for you!

But how do we know our EdgeRank with a friend or no friend?

Here they talk about the level of edge (or interest, if you prefer) that you have with a friend … but I’m not entirely convinced that this is so!

I wanted to develop this script to have a clearer view of the “friends” list that appeared on the screen … and I found that not all of them were my friends, indeed, some I had never even heard of!

But let’s work with order, this is how the list of friends and edgerank appears in the original script (I used our company account and blacked the names for privacy):

Not bad, you can see that the lowest-that means more negative – the number is, the greater the interest in that person is, but … other than that, you do not understand that good.

So I went to see the original code and found some useful information that could be displayed: photo of the friend, his url and also the “additional text” … which I found to be an indication of how many friends you have in common, when you are not friends!

So I began to do a little trials and I came up with this:

Not bad, right?

I highlighted the non-friends, and is much more reliable than many tutorials and articles that talk about how to see who has visited your profile or who are your personal  ”fb stalkers”, as the one saying to keep the code of the page and search for “OrderedFriendsListInitialData” or “OrderedFriends” for short: you will see an IDs list of people … but they are not the ones with whom you have more interaction at all, but are (from what I gather reading around) only a form of cache of the FB CHAT … in fact, looking for the “no friend” ID (blue background) in this list … I didn’t even find it!

And it is obvious: if someone is not my friend, I cannot chat. So this confirms that the rumor that circulates is just this, a rumor, and how this list is only used for chat.

Oh yeah … how do you get this code? Well … now I’m really tired, so I’ll publish soon in a kind of “second episode.”

So we looked at the RSS Feed url and discovered that it doesn’t work no more!

Look, this was our feed:   http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/71249529.rss

As you can see, there’s a standard structure and you can customize yours simply changing the ID at the end, in this way:  

http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/YOUR-ID.rss (just replace YOUR-ID)

How to know your own ID? there are a few online tools to get it with one click starting from the username, try this one:  http://www.idfromuser.com/

But today it didn’t work… this is actually the screenshoot of our feed’s old url:

Not so exciting, uh?

At that point we looked for an alternative url, it seemed impossible that Twitter closed the RSS Feeds at all!

In fact, we found that another way to retrieve the status updates in RSS format that is still valid and working, even easier that the first one because it doesn’t need no ID, you should only know the username!

The method is with the twitter API url, simply another url to copy, customize and past in your newsreader or widget configuration as the new source of tweets:

https://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/user_timeline.rss?screen_name=advertalis

Look carefully at the end of the url:  just replace our name with your and you’ll get your tweets back, as we did:

So, just replace the old url with this working one, in this way:

https://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/user_timeline.rss?screen_name=YOUR-USER-NAME

Now our widget is working again, if you were already using the API url for Twitter RSS Feeds you should be fine, if not now you know how to fix it quickly!
